An ancient Chinese story tells that after a long day of wandering around the forest in search of edible grains and herbs, the divine farmer Shennong discovered tea. His fortunate encounter ended a long journey of trial and error. It all happened once when on a single day he tasted 72 poisonous herbs. He felt weak, slipped on the ground, grabbing some leaves of an unknown plant. Their healing powers brought him back to life. Or so the legend says.

The irony of luck. Alas, something we just can’t spot anywhere but can’t get enough of. In Thailand, they wear red for luck on Sunday but never on Monday. If you rock an empty chair in Cuba, death is near. As the clock strikes 12pm in Spain on New Year’s Eve, eating twelve grapes will usher in a year full of luck. For Irish fishermen, it’s unlucky to whistle at sea unless you “whistle up a storm.”

Cocktails are made for romance. Their long stems and crystal glassware, measured patience, shakes and clangs, natural garnishes, and gushes of smooth flavors all collide together to intoxicate the palette and imagination. No one really knows where the first one was imbibed, but the cocktail is considered to have first gained proper praise on American soil. Other cultures have been lovingly mixing spirits for centuries, though. The ancient Greeks mixed spices and honey with their wine, and the British after them took to sugaring their grog to make it go down with ease.
