Romantic Drinks Throughout History

Romantic Drinks Throughout History

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you may be looking ahead to some romantic cocktails to set the mood. We thought we would take this opportunity to take a look through history at the most romantic drinks.

Absinth

This distilled spirit first came on the scene 200 years ago famed for its hallucinogenic effects. This vibrant drink is green in color, which comes from the many herbs used in the distilling process. Flavored with common wormwood, a bitter shrub that can be poisonous in high doses, absinth is definitely one of the more risky and controversial drinks throughout history.

This drink, dubbed the Green Fairy, promotes artistic inspiration, visions and dreams, so it’s no wonder that famous artists such as Degas, Van Gogh, and Picasso portrayed the romantic side of absinthe drinkers. Even Ernest Hemingway, Rimbaud and Oscar Wilde wrote about it.

Sensual Bubblies

We would be remiss if we neglected to give a nod to one of the most romantic drinks in history: champagne. It’s the first drink you think of when celebrating an important event. So whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or an anniversary or both, reach for the bubbly for a delight to the taste buds.

If you’re looking to take it easy, try some non-alcoholic wine such as Crispy Chardonnay or a sparkling rose.

Love Potion

If you love Harry Potter, you know the effects a Love Potion can have on your love interest. This enchanting drink blends lime juice, vodka, sugar, cranberry juice, and grenadine, garnished with pomegranates, strawberries, red grapes or cherries.

Naked Cosmo

You will love this refreshing and tangy drink that’s low in calories. It’s made with any vodka of your choice, cranberry juice, sugar syrup, lemon juice, and triple sec liqueur. The cosmopolitan got its modern revival start in the late 1980s, gaining popularity on the hit show Sex and the City. But it’s really a throwback to a late 19th century cocktail called the Daisy.

Mimosa

Some say the mimosa was created in Paris in 1925, while others say it got its start in London in 1921. Whatever the origin, this bubbly drink quickly became popular among the breakfast and brunch crowd due to its simple ingredients: just champagne and orange juice.

Hanky Panky

This swanky cocktail was born in 1903, made from gin, sweet vermouth and Fernet-Branca. It’s a spin-off of the traditional sweet martini, adding a unique taste thanks to the Fernet-Branca, an Italian type of bitter or aromatic spirit.

Martini

Thought to have origins in Europe, there’s no greater romantic drink than the martini. Immortalized in old world Hollywood, the classic martini is made from gin and vermouth, garnished with an olive or lemon twist. As one of the most popular mixed drinks in the world, you can order it on the rocks or straight up, or “shaken not stirred” as James Bond would have wanted it.
