Memorial Day Beverage Favorites
With Memorial Day coming up on May 30, we thought we would highlight some beverage favorites for this patriotic holiday.
Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1971. This is a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many people celebrate this federal holiday by attending parades, visiting cemeteries, and hosting barbecues. As the unofficial kick-off to summer, it stands to reason that you would incorporate some tasty beverages in your celebrations. Here are a few favorites to try as you gather with friends and family.
Summer Cup Mocktail
You will need:
- 1 cucumber slice
- 1 sprig of mint
- Frozen red berries
- 120ml clear, sparkling lemonade
- Ice
For garnish:
- More frozen berries
- Chopped fruits
- Cucumber slice
- Mint
- Citrus
Cut the cucumber and mint sprig into little pieces. Boil 200ml water in a small pan, then add the mint and cucumber. Turn off the heat and let sit for about two minutes. Add a few frozen berries, allow them to defrost for a couple minutes, then use a spoon to crush them slightly. Strain this mixture and serve over lemonade and ice. Garnish with optional chopped fruit.
Fresh Watermelon Margaritas
You will need:
Mint Simple Syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup mint leaves (freshly chopped)

- 1/2 small watermelon
- 4 tablespoons sparkling lime
- 2 ounces tequila
- 1 ounce mint simple syrup
- Salt for rim garnish
- Lime wedges for garnish
Instructions
Mint Simple Syrup
Bring sugar, water and mint leaves to a boil in a small saucepan. Then simmer and stir for a couple minutes, till the sugar dissolves. Take off heat and let cool. Strain syrup and throw away mint leaves. Pour into a bottle and place in refrigerator. It will keep for a month or so.
Fresh Watermelon Margaritas
Cut watermelon into cubes and puree in a blender until smooth. Add ice to a cocktail shaker and place the liquid ingredients inside. Shake and pour into glasses. Rim and garnish the drinks, and serve.
Non-Alcoholic White Wine Spritzers
You will need:
- 3/4 glass chilled non-alcoholic white wine or alcoholic white wine (your choice!)
- 1/4 glass chilled club soda
- Slice of lime
Instructions:
Fill a wine glass halfway with the wine. Add the club soda until three-quarters full. Garnish with lime. Voila! A tasty, chilly beverage to celebrate this momentous occasion.
