7 Realistic New Year Resolutions You Should Actually Fulfill

7 Realistic New Year Resolutions You Should Actually Fulfill

Lose weight. Drink less. Read more. If you’re tired of failing at your top New Years resolutions year after year, it’s time to get real. Try setting goals for the new year that are more realistic instead, and you might be surprised at the results. Here are seven New Year’s resolution ideas.

1. Cook More, Order Less

If you wonder how to lose weight in the New Year every January but making major changes just becomes too overwhelming, try small steps. Eating out frequently is a major cause of weight gain. Make cutting back less painful by bringing in lunch just one day a week — aim for Monday, which stinks anyway, and comes after two days where you presumably can find 10 minutes to pack a lunch.

2. Drink Water Everyday

New York has amazing tap water, so why aren’t you drinking it? Wake up and immediately drink a full 16 ounces of water. Have more before lunch, again at 3 o’clock, and the last before dinner. Not only will it fill you up before mealtime, you may find you lose a couple of pounds of water weight and fulfill your New Year resolution for weight loss. It also helps your complexion and reduces puffy eyes. Can’t stomach tap? Order bottled for home delivery instead.

3. Take the Stairs

Eating smarter and moving more usually makes for happy results. If making more workout time isn’t possible, get exercise in where you can. Get off a stop early and walk the remaining blocks. Hike the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator. Skip the cab and hoof it instead. Every step counts, so start now — after investing in comfortable shoes.

4. Say No

Did you know the stress hormone cortisol keeps the pounds packed on? Practice saying no. No to hosting the Halloween party again. No to running that big PTA fundraiser. No to the project that’s really better suited for someone else, anyway. Give yourself some free mental space, and you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.

5. Call Your Family Every Week

Until you’re a parent you have no idea how much you can love another human being — and how much it hurts when that person ignores you. Mend fences with your family and stay in touch every week, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You’ll feel good and so will they.

6. Cut the Cream and Sugar

What’s an easy and cheap way to cut back on calories, which is easier than you think? Cut the cream and sugar out of your coffee. Just give it a try — it will probably only take a couple of days for you to get used to the taste, and you’ll love it! The downside? You’re about to become a huge coffee snob.

7. Visit a New Museum Once a Season

Now that you’ve taken care of your body, your mind and your relationships, it’s time to boost your appreciation for culture. Visit a museum once a season, and appreciate the rich cultural resource that’s unmistakably NYC.
