Let’s Time Travel: Part 2

Let’s Time Travel: Part 2

We’ve been time traveling for the holidays, transporting from colonial to modern times to explore the drinks throughout American history. Back in the colonies, and perhaps due to the level of libational frequency, drinks took on much more acrobatic titles. Fierce names like blackstrap, stonewall, flip, and rattle-skull paint a picture of merry menageries where tough-working colonists thoroughly unwound from the day’s slog.

Hooch was so fixed in the colonial way of life, common opinion thinking that it was healthier than the brackish sobering water many were drinking, George Washington traded his sword for a whiskey still after the war.

Get your piece of American history by serving your guests these drinks for the holidays. Ingredients can be found in the links with lots of other ideas on our website.

Flip

Soon after invading the taverns in the 1690s, flip became a mainstay. Today there are different versions of the cocktail, but it’s generally made with your choice of liquor, cream or milk, fine sugar, an egg, and ground nutmeg. For a colonial-style flip, shake the ingredients together to floth the egg and cream together, then pour and dust with nutmeg. We have several delicious types of creams to try in your flips. Try Oatly Oat Milk, Kitu Maple Hazelnut and Vanilla Bean, and The Country Creamery. All delicious, specially for you.

Fast-forward five hundred years later. You’re entertaining your guests, it’s getting colder outside, and the conversation turns to your last vacations. Dreaming of warmer days, take your guests to the tropics.

Apple Cider Mojito

An apple cider mojito will take you there. For two drinks, juice one lemon over some fresh mint leaves and lightly mash, add half a cup of rum, a little sugar or honey, mix, and fill the rest with apple cider or juice. Our Cawston Press Cloudy Apple and Martinelli’s unfiltered organic apple mix deliciously well. Also try Harney & Sons Organic and Martinelli’s sparkling versions for some added verve.
