Favorite Drinks of the Presidents

From George Washington to Donald Trump, nearly all American presidents had a favorite beverage. FDR was famous for his cocktails, James Buchanan his Madeira and sherry, and George W. Bush imbibed enough in his youth to “retire” from drinking before entering office. We’re exploring some of the presidents’ favorite drinks for Presidents’ Day, so grab a seat, listen up, and act, at least, slightly presidential. We’re going to need a deep glass to lead the league, and Beverage Universe has all the right gear to fill it.

FDR’s gin-based martinis

It just wouldn’t be right starting with any other president than the one that repealed Prohibition. Franklin D. Roosevelt loved himself a good cocktail or two after, or during, a day of liberating the world of Nazism and freeing the American people of systemic oppression. Like us, he also came from New York, an icon of freedom and liberation. Cheers to that!

John F. Kennedy’s trendy drinks

At the peak of his career, JFK was living in the throes of the Sexual Revolution. Architecture, clothing, music, and attitudes were shedding old skin and embracing a freedom introduced by improvisational jazz and the ruttish experiments leftover from the Roaring Twenties. Still holding onto classic vibes, JFK still allowed himself to imbibe in trendy drinks. Bloody Marys, daiquiris, and Heinekens were just a few trending drinks that he enjoyed during his presidency.

James Buchanan’s sherry

America’s “worst president” stocked a serious shelf of sherry and Madeira wine. A friend once reported, “The Madeira and sherry that he has consumed would fill more than one old cellar.” Sourced from the beautiful Portuguese islands of Madeira, Madeira wine was uber famous in its heyday. With a technique that repeatedly heats the beverage, flavors of toffee and caramel, peach, hazelnut, and a touch of walnut oil escape from the glass and into your boca.

Beverage Universe stocks all the mixers fit for presidents and presidential guests, plus non-alcoholic staples that can wet your palate without befuddling the work that your country needs to arrest oppression, wherever it hides, and save the free world.
