Upcycling Your Glass Bottles

You’ve heard of recycling, but what about upcycling? It involves reusing a product to create a different product, much like recycling. With upcycling, the new product is generally of higher quality or valued higher than the original product. You can upcycle any number of materials and merchandise, but we’re going to focus on how to reuse glass bottles to create fun new home décor.

There are plenty of ways to upcycle glass bottles into beautiful home décor, but making a flower vase is one of the easiest. You don’t have to cut into or change the shape of the bottle to complete it. Simply clean the bottles well, take a bit of paint to the exterior for decoration and fill them with water and flowers. Suddenly, you have a gorgeous, hand-made centerpiece for your table.

Make shelves from old glass bottles using a number of the same sized bottles — preferably four per level. Locate a few pieces of wood that are relatively the same size. This one is one of the hardest glass bottle crafts on our list, but it’s also one of the most beautiful. Use your bottles as the sides and stabilizers. Keep them in place by cutting holes in the wood and sliding it over the necks of each bottle.

When you’re trying to figure out what to do with empty glass bottles, consider an upcycled lamp. Carefully cut the bottom of the bottle off and attach a ring of wood or metal around its base. The hole in the glass will allow you to run the electrical wiring of your new lamp through the glass bottle, while the wooden or metal base keep your new lamp stable.
